What brought you to KPU?
I wanted to pursue a degree in Accounting and Kwantlen University College (as it was at the time) had a reputable accounting program while also being local, more affordable, and with smaller class sizes. Being local, I spent the time I would have spent commuting working part-time to help cover tuition costs, and with the smaller class sizes we were able to maximize the value of our class time, so for me it made perfect sense to attend KPU. Why accounting? Accounting is the language of business, so it seemed like a solid foundation to have regardless of the career path I chose.
Tell us about your favourite KPU experience
Being a peer tutor at the learning centre. That experience helped me build confidence in my own knowledge, while allowing me to learn how to read a person's strengths and weaknesses to be able to coach them to success and build their self-confidence. That led to me taking on private tutoring clients and eventually tutoring CA, CGA, CMA (now all merged into CPA) students and MBA students; from there I became an assignment and exam marker for CMA (now CPA) Canada. I was also a co-founder of ENACTUS KPU, one of the original board members of the Accounting Society of Kwantlen, and the Director of Finance with the Kwantlen Student Association. These were all very valuable learning experiences and I do not believe I would have been able to get the same experiences elsewhere.
What impact has KPU had on your life?
You get from your time at post-secondary what you put in. Other institutions felt too academic which is not what I wanted from my education. My goal was not to merely study business, I wanted to be given the ability to explore my entrepreneurial side and take on new challenges and experiences to give me not only the hard skills, but also the soft skills and confidence to become a leader in business; Kwantlen gave me the perfect platform to do this. In my opinion, your worth is based on what you are capable of and what you have accomplished, not merely the name of the university you attended or the name of your employer, so focus on developing yourself and success will follow.
What are you up to now?
After graduating from KPU I worked in a variety of roles in industry for a few years to obtain my CMA (now CPA) designation. From there I attended law school at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops and moved to Chilliwack upon being called to the bar. I am now the founder and owner of Alpine Legal Services where we serve clients all over the lower mainland in the areas of real estate, business, and wills and estates law. Being a lawyer and a business owner tests me in unique ways every single day but I love every part of it no matter how challenging.
